ADJUNCT FACULTY CLASSROOM OBSERVATION PROCEDURES

The procedures below have been summarized from the AFT contract. Please refer to the AFT contract for legal conditions and obligations
  • Adjunct faculty are evaluated in the first semester of employment and in the first semester of each new assignment. Thereafter, at least once every six semesters. Additional evaluations may be initiated by the dean.
  • An adjunct evaluation consists of one peer evaluation, one manager evaluation, and a student component.
  • A peer reviewer is defined as the department chair or designated tenured faculty member. A tenure-track faculty member may serve as peer if no tenured faculty members exist. If the peer is reviewing an online class the peer must have online experience.
  • The selection of the Peer Reviewer shall be made by the appropriate administrator in consultation with the Department Chair/Coordinator from a list of three peers, chosen by the evaluee. If the names of peers are not submitted in a timely manner, the peer will be chosen by the dean/chair.
  • A classroom review must be a minimum of 50 minutes.
  • A single summary rating on the appropriate form shall be submitted to the Faculty Evaluations Office as soon as possible, and in no case later than the third week prior to the end of the semester. (Instructor Peer/Manager Form)
  • In the case that a peer review cannot be met, the manager evaluation may be doubled. (Double-Manager)
  • The management component shall be a review of at least 50 minutes. The management score shall be submitted to the Faculty Evaluations Office no later than three weeks prior to the end of the semester.
  • In the case that there is no manager available for evaluation, the peer evaluation may be counted twice. (Double-Peer)
  • Student Component: At the current time we are NOT evaluating every class section for all faculty.
  • Student components will be conducted in one of each prep. If the instructor is only teaching one prep, two sections of the prep will receive student evaluations.
  • New Preps initiate an out of cycle evaluation for part-time faculty.
  • Student components may be administered by a peer evaluator, manager, or designated classified staff member.
  • Evaluations may only occur between week 5 and week 12 of the semester.
  • Distance Ed classes have a student component that is set up electronically by the FEO.
  • The Job Description for Adjunct Faculty may be found here.
